FAQ

Why do so few independent films ever get distributed?

Indie filmmakers are assuming that distributors will be interested in their films.

They believe distributors will pick up their films because they know the public will love their work.

But this is rare. Distributors often use independent filmmakers.

They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.

They may delay the release of a low budget film until after summer blockbuster season begins.

Distributors are also trying to keep films off the streets until audiences have already spent hundreds upon thousands of dollars on tickets or popcorn.

They don't want these profits to be lost.

What is the average number of movies Hollywood makes in a year?

Each year, Hollywood studios produce approximately 3,000 films. It's true, there are three thousand!

Hollywood spends billions on film advertising. They spend millions to produce them. They also spend millions promoting them. How many of these movies do you think end up in theaters?

The answer is probably around 200-300. So what happens to all those other 2,700+ films? Many of the films are either directly-to-video released or left to collect dust in storage vaults.

Some of them may not be seen. Some of them were selected for distribution via Netflix Prime, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus, iTunes or Google Play.

Hence why don't more of these films be released? Why aren’t they being shown in theaters instead? They're too costly to produce.

They would be released in theaters if they were less expensive to produce.

Here's where you find me. I can help guide you in the best way possible to put your movie in theaters.

I will teach you how to increase your return on investment (ROI), as well as increasing your chances of seeing the movie in theaters.

Let's face the facts...

It can be very difficult to get your film in theaters. The process is long, complex and full of legalities.

You may end up spending a lot of money before you get started.

Even worse, your window of opportunity to distribute your film is very limited.

There simply isn't enough time between when a film is finished, and its theatrical run begins.

How much does Hollywood make a year?

A movie takes around $100 million to create. For a decade, ten movies would be enough to produce enough money for a country.

You would have your own island, including an airport, a power station, a bank and a post office.

If that doesn't sound like fun, then you must be insane.

How To

How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1960 established the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.

You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. A second letter confirms acceptance if the nominee accepts the nomination. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Your family members can nominate you for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF does not intend to be a historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
